![]() Readers who have followed LBJ’s life throughout this series will find much that is familiar and praiseworthy. And he occasionally peers ahead in order to foreshadow themes that will presumably permeate the final volume of the series. Ever mindful of readers who have not read previous volumes, Caro periodically refers back to important moments in LBJ’s early life to provide valuable context. This 605-page volume is comprised of two sections of nearly equal length: the first consisting of the period leading up to Kennedy’s assassination, and the second focusing on the earliest weeks of LBJ’s presidency. ![]() Published in 2012, “The Passage of Power” covers roughly a half-dozen years: from Johnson’s campaign for the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination (while Senate Majority Leader) to his first State of the Union Address as President in 1964, just seven weeks after JFK’s assassination. He is currently working on the fifth – and presumably final – volume in his LBJ series. ![]() Caro is a former investigative reporter and the author of two Pulitzer Prize-winning biographies. “ The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson” is the fourth (and most recently published) volume in Robert Caro’s series covering the life of Lyndon B. ![]() ![]() ![]() “The Forbidden Heart" (2013) - bridge novella, only available in ebook Gods of Green Mountain (written in 1972, published in 2004) ♥ “Dark Seed" (2001) - promotional ebook prequel novella Shooting Stars (2002) - an omnibus of all 4 minibooks “Gathering Clouds" (2007) - limited edition novella included with Rain movie DVD The Wildflowers (2001) - an omnibus of all 4 minibooks Orphans (2000) - an omnibus of all 4 minibooks Andrews herself before passing, all others are written by the ghostwriter) (the ♥ symbol shows books written by V.C. This is particularly true with the Shrike and the final scenes of Aenea.Īfter being the focal point, in some ways, of the first two books, the Shrike might as well not exist in this story. By the last quarter of the book, he has over 2,000 pages of story written, and the story-line endings are wrapped up much too quickly. For one, it was over 700 pages, but striking, it seems rushed at the end. That being said, he may have intended this book to be two. ![]() The beginning of this book is so smoothly integrated to the prior in the series that they must have been written together. As the final story in the Cantos, this is where they all come together and finally meet, and the story concludes with two big twists, one is you didn’t see coming, and the other, which was underwhelming, see below if you don’t mind spoilers (if a book published over 20 years ago fall under spoiler protection). Captain de Soya is brought out of exile and commanded to continue his pursuit of Aenea as the Pax, the Church, and the Core all seek to capture her. Raul, after having separated from Aenea, continues on his own journey with the end goal of meeting back with her as planned. This is a nearly seamless continuation of the story from Endymion. This is the final book in the series, check out my review of the other three – Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion. ![]() ![]() ![]() These times demand the fierce honesty of Brittney Cooper, who reminds us that ultimately feminism, friendship, and faith in one's own superpowers are all we really need to turn things right-side up again."-Dust jacket. ![]() In Brittney Cooper's world, neither mean girls nor fuckboys ever win. ![]() And it took another intervention, this time staged by one of her homegirls, to turn Brittney into the fierce feminist she is today. When Cooper learned of her grandmother's eloquent rage about love, sex, and marriage in an epic and hilarious front-porch confrontation, her life was changed. Black women's eloquent rage is what makes Serena Williams such a powerful tennis player. But Cooper shows us that there is more to the story than that. Yet too often Black women's anger has been caricatured into an ugly and destructive force that threatens the civility and social fabric of American democracy. In the Black feminist tradition of Audre Lorde, Brittney Cooper reminds us that anger is a powerful source of energy that can give us the strength to keep on fighting. Personally I see this novel as a way of revealing that we cannot really know a culture until we have been immersed into it. This book is very well written and also can be used as an example to show plot, sequencing, and voice while writing. This is a real page turner that middle schoolers would enjoy reading. ![]() "The Ransom of Mercy Carter" is a novel that I would use as a lively supplement to a history lesson about Native Americans and their interactions with the colonials. After so much exposure, Mercy struggles to balance loyalty to her own family and traditions with a growing appreciation for the Kahnawake way of life. After a the difficult winter trek that takes them north to Canada, Mercy settles into life in a traditional Indian village. After their village is burned and many of its residents killed, Mercy and more than 100 other settlers are taken prisoner by the Kahnawake Mohawk. The balance of my STF subscription was filled with issues of Justice League of America, which I continued to read for a few years… until a three-issue crossover featuring the Justice Society of America and (you guessed it) the New Gods. My first introduction to them was back in ‘78 when a few of them appeared in the last issue of Super-Team Family along with the Flash. Specifically, two decades of indifference or dismissiveness toward the New Gods. I carry two decades of baggage into this review.
